Garside Sands help children put health and safety training
into practice
Local pupils from Oak Bank School were given the chance recently
to put their health and safety training into practice following a
tour of Leighton Buzzard-based Garside Sands as part of the
school’s Vocational Education Programme.
As part of the students’ City and Guilds
Skills for Working Life studies, pupils, between the ages of 14 and
16, took part in the tour in order to see how important health and
safety is within the workplace and how it can be managed
efficiently.
Following the visit, the young people are
putting their health & safety awareness and practical skills to
the test in a number of disciplines including designing and laying
block paving. The materials for the workshops were donated by
Aggregate Industries businesses, Heath and Reach-based Garside
Sands and its sister companies, Bradstone and Charcon based in
Grovebury Road who manufacture block paving.
Subhash Rawal, Head of Vocational Studies at
Oak Bank School, said: “First hand experience is invaluable when
teaching young people about health and safety in a busy workplace.
The tour and subsequent practical experience, gave the children the
chance to see how everything they have learned in the classroom can
be implemented on site.
“Thanks to the help of Garside Sands and
Bradstone and Charcon, who are 100 per cent committed to health and
safety, the pupils are now one step closer to completing their
Preparing for Work module as part of their City and Guilds
qualification, which will no doubt benefit them greatly in the
future.”
