GARSIDE SANDS EARNS ITS STRIPES
Aggregate Industries’ specialist silica sand business, Garside Sands, has earned its ‘scout badge’ after donating sharp sand from the Heath & Reach based Garside Sands business, along with ten pallets of end of line blocks from Aggregate Industries Leighton based block factory, for use in the construction of the nearby Stewkley Scout Hut.
The company became involved with the Scout troop through customer service advisor, Sue Willis, a former Scout leader,. Sue, who lives in Stewkley, is on the Scout Executive Committee and is a climbing instructor for the scouts.
The 1st Stewkley Scouts have never had their own hut and have been looking for site and base for years. She said: “The scouts have been without a home for a while so when Steve Faulkner, owner of the local Manor Business Park, came forward and offered the group a plot of land, we were over the moon.”
In order to construct a permanent home for the troops, a portacabin class room, previously owned by Buckingham County Council, was purchased from the local village school, St Michaels, for one pound..
Through a series of fundraising events and activities and as a result of a number of donations, the Scout group employed a specialist contractor to dismantle and reassemble the portacabin on the donated land.
Sue continues: “We were delighted to donate ten pallets of mixed end of line blocks, from Leighton Buzzard Charcon Block Plant, along with five tonnes of Garside’s Washed Sharp sand for a pathway to the portacabin to be constructed., The volunteers put the blocks to good use and we now have an impressive and attractive entrance path.
Liz Brown, Garside’s marketing manager added “Playing an active role in the communities in which we operate is central to our whole outlook, and it is especially good when the business can support the interests of its team. We were therefore only too happy to help through donating materials, which, whilst of small value to us, will significantly help give the scouts a better environment in which to meet.”
And to keep it ‘in the family’, the material was even collected from the plant and delivered to site by an ex-Stewkley Scout, who now works as an owner driver for Aggregate Industries.
