GARSIDE SANDS USED FOR THE INSTALLATION OF THE UK’S FIRST AQUATURF HOCKEY PITCH
The first ‘Aquaturf’ hockey pitch to be installed in the UK has been fitted at Holcombe Hockey Club in Rochester, Kent with the help of Garside Sands, a leading producer of specialist graded silica sands.
The new surface maintains all the high playing performance characteristics of top of the range water based pitches but eliminates the need for watering before, during and after games.
Originally produced by an Australian based company, Team Sports Surfaces, ‘Aquaturf’ utilises a new artificial grass fibre technology that produces the same performance characteristics as a water based pitch, but uses the traditional sand infill which reduces the need for watering.
Liz Brown, marketing manager at Garside Sands, said: “The pitch will not only add to the Holcombe’s existing facilities, but it will help to save the club a significant amount of money and water which is particularly poignant with the increasing water restrictions in summer months. These water savings will also be supplemented by a considerable reduction in maintenance costs.”
The new surface was laid by specialist contractor H&A Sports Surfaces Ltd and was in-filled with 70 tonnes of Garside 2EW sand. Harold Jayes from H&A Sports Surfaces Ltd says: “We always use Garside Sands for our pitch work. From experience, we have faith in the sand they supply and we encourage our customers to use and specify their sand products. We only use Garside 2EW as it maintains good drainage properties.”
